Special Education Services

Speech and Language Services
Being a strong communicator is one of the most important skills that people need in order to be successful in all areas of life. Senpaq’cin is fortunate to have a strong speech and language program led by Holley Harfman. Students who require extra support in sound production or language communication skills are placed on a priority service model of intervention. Holly assesses, sets learning targets, and designs intervention programming for individual students. Mrs. Swift, our resident speech and language assistant, provides direct instruction and practice with students to help them meet the target goals as identified by our speech and language pathologist.

Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Behavioural Intervention Therapy
We are fortunate to be a member of the BC First Nations Schools Association. This association helps to support First Nations students who are attending on-reserve Band Schools in our Province. One of the many services we have access to receiving through this association is working with travelling specialists like physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Families who have concerns about their child’s gross or fine motor development, sensory input concerns, attention and impulsivity control, behavioural outbursts, etc. can request, through the school, to have their child seen by these specialists. The school, the family and the specialists’ world together to collaboratively establish a plan to support individual student needs.

Counseling Services
Senpaq’cin School is fortunate to have partnered with several local counsellors and/or agencies to provide social-emotional counselling services for some of the students at the school. The school provides office spaces for counsellors to work within the school building during the school day. The school acknowledges the vital role these professionals play in providing important social-emotional support to students as a means to optimize learning in the classroom environments.
